Hello and welcome to the learning commons space for Ellison Library. We look forward to sharing innovative ways to inspire your students. This webpage will contain information  on :

  • How to implement Maker Space in your classroom

  • Ellison Library Mobile Maker Kit resource list

  • Which sites have the best resources

  • STEM lesson plans (updated monthly)

  • Design Thinking Challenges (updated monthly)

  • Schedule for Maker Space times in our Library

My hope is that I have created a space that will inspire and engage both the teachers and students at our school.  If there is anything that you feel is important and should be added to our site OR if you would like to collaborate on a project for your classroom, pop by the library and let me know!

Integrating Maker Space into your Classroom

The best way to start is simply to start. Integrating Maker Space into your classroom can be as simple as allowing students the time and space to create. Our library will have it’s very own maker kit, but SD22 has recently added a maker kit that is available to rent at the DRC. The SD22 Tech Team also puts on Maker Space workshops- keep your eye out for our next Pro-D and if you can check one out! The following articles are wonderful resources to get started in your classroom today.

Library to Learning Commons

Canada Education- Learning Commons

The Ellison Library team  is hoping to provide a learning space that will be well utilised by every teacher and student in the school. We want to be seen as more of a learning space than a quiet space to exchange library books. Lately we seen an increase in the amount of traffic with students coming in to research or work on projects in the library space. We love to see students in the library- reading, researching, exploring, and expanding their learning.

Encourage your students to use our library as another classroom. I will do my best to be available for your students whenever they need me! With reading blitz finishing up this week, I will be available in the library from 8:45-12:00 every day until Christmas break. I am also available for teachers- should you want to come in and use the library space or have some ideas about library collaboration, let me know!

STEM Lesson Plans

“STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach.”

As we embrace the new curriculum in British Columbia, we must look for ways to create authentic learning opportunities for our students by integrating learning content from Science, Math, and Socials. As we see more of an integrated approach to teaching each subject, with more connections between each, we can use the STEM lessons, and ideas to help us achieve this shift.  Below are some great websites with links to STEM lesson plans that can be easily taught in your classrooms today.
